On Thursday, Sept. 10th, the Union 8th grade football team got the season of to a great start with a 42-0 win over East Marshall. The game was played in LeGrand.
Union won the toss and deferred. East Marshall received and ran 2 running plays for loses of 5 and 3 yards. On 3rd and 18 they passed and it was incomplete. Jay Scheel returned the punt 50 yards for the games first touchdown. Scheel ran it from 3 yds out to get the 2 point conversion.
On Union's next possession, Scheel connected with Dylan Kokesh on a 46 yard TD pass. Marcelo Hernandez ran in the 2 point PAT to make it 16-0 Union.
Union's third possession also resulted in a touchdown. Jay Scheel had runs of 17 and 34 yards, and then Hernandez took it in on the next play for an 8 yard TD run. The PAT was no good. Union 22 EM 0.
After an interception by Kolten Bader the Knights started the next possession on the Mustangs 26 yd line. Five plays later Scheel connected with Kokesh again, this time for a 7 yard touchdown. Union attempted to kick the PAT this time. The snap was a little high, and Kokesh the kicker caught it and ran in for the 2 points.
On the next possession, Hernandez broke loss on a 32 yd. TD run. The PAT kick was no good.
Union would receive to start the 2nd half, and Marcelo Hernandez took the kickoff back 80 yards for the Knights' 5th TD of the day. The PAT kick was no good. That made the score 36-0 in favor of Union. Marcelo carried the ball 4 times in the game and scored 3 TD's and one 2 point PAT.
Union ended the day with 191 total yards of offense. Of those 131 yards were rushing yards on 14 attempts for 2 touchdowns and 2 PAT's. That calculates to 9.4 yards per carry! Scheel was 3-4 passing for 60 yards and 2TD's.
Defensively Union held East Marshall to 103 rushing yards on 31 attempts. Which is 3.3 yds per carry. The Mustangs 0 for 8 passing with 2 interceptions. Kolten Bader had a pick and so did Joey Damro. Nick Weich and Hernandez both recovered fumbles also. Eric Miller led the team with 8 tackles, Hernandez had 5, Damro 4, Tairk Goken 4, Luke Wilson 4, Cole Reiter 3, Nathan Harting 3, Teddy Tecklenburg 3, Nick Weich 3, Dylan Kokesh,, Riley McDowell, and Jon Roettger each had 2 tackles. And Bo Bader, Kolten Bader, and Jay Scheel all had 1 tackle.
