The Union Knights traveled to Anamosa this Friday night and came away with a 49-3 win after posting 35 points in the second quarter. Union scored six touchdowns on the first six possessions in the first half. Two school records were set with Wesley Burnside erupting 95 yards (old record, Eric Pettengill, 80 yards vs Osage 1997) in the first quarter and Zach Purdy returning a second quarter kickoff 93 yards (old record, Bob Pipho, 92 yards vs Maquoketa 2000). In the sophomore game the young Knights showed strength in the second half and finished with a win 40-20.

Wesley Burnside had 192 yards rushing in eight carries and three TDs (18,95,55) as the offensive line dominated the line of scrimmage with key blocks from Cole Johnson, TJ Gray, Matt Gross, Reece Ewoldt, Zach Bathen and Austin Bunz. Josh Dunkelberger also had a TD run of 50 yards in the second quarter and totaled 61 yards on the night. In the passing department the Steven McGarvey to Jared Wauters combination racked up 138 yards in four completions and two TDs (53 and 21 yards). McGarvey was 5 of 8 for 147 yards and two TDs.

Defensively the Knights held Anamosa to nine yards in the rushing department with five tackles for loss and forced four turnovers. Anamosa took to the air 41 times and had two interceptions (Bradly Siebel with a 33 yards return, Brett Aldrich). The Union defense also continued to create fumbles with two turnovers recovered by Damon Powell and Matt Gross. Gross' recovery came on a goalline drive inside the one yard line. Leading tacklers were Blake Clark (12T, 6UT, 6AT, 2TFL), Josh Dunkelberger (11T, 6UT, 5AT, 1.5 TFL), Bradly Siebel (6T, 4U, 2A), Justin Macal (5T, 3U, 2A) and Bob Mangrich (5T, 3U, 2A, .5TFL). Austin Bunz also had one tackle for loss and several pass hurries.

In addition to the kickoff return by Purdy, the Knight special teams provided super coverage with the kickoff while McGarvey had eight kickoffs 49.3 average (395 yds), and 7 of 7 on PATs.

Players Of The Week Vs. Anamosa:

Offensive back: Wesley Burnside, 8 carries for 192 yards and 3 TDs.

Offense: The offensive line allowed Union to score six touchdowns in the first six possessions. Cole Johnson, TJ Gray, Matt Gross, Reece Ewoldt, and Zach Bathen.

Special Teams: Zach Purdy set a school record with a 93 yard kickoff return in the second quarter .

Defensive Line: TJ Gray graded out at 87% efficiency and had 3 tackles.

Austin Bunz graded out and had four solo tackles, and numerous pass hurries.

Defensive Backs: Bradly Siebel, interception, six tackles (4UT, 2AT) and 98% grade efficiency.

The Union Knights are now (4-0) overall and (2-0) in 3A District 4 play. The Knights play at La Porte City on Friday night for homecoming versus the Vinton Vikings. The sophomore game kicks off at 5:15pm and the varsity game starts at 7:30pm.
