The Union Knights were challenged by a determined Independence Mustang team during the first half but still mounted a 16-0 lead at the end of the second quarter. The Knight defense created six turnovers with three fumbles (Justin Macal, Blake Clark, Bradly Siebel) and three interceptions (Jared Wauters, Siebel, Macal). A stingy scoring defense was led by Blake Clark's 10 tackles (2 UT, 8 AT, 1.5 TFL) and Josh Dunkelberger's 7 tackles (3 UT, 4 AT). Three other Knights recorded six tackles each: Damon Powell, Bob Mangrich, and Matt Gross. Offensively, Steven McGarvey was 14 of 22 for 149 yards and two TDs. Austin Bunz led all receivers with 7 catches for 100 yards and two TDs. Jared Wauters caught five balls for 51 yards and also scored one TD via the ground game. Zach Purdy contributed three catches for 32 yards. In the running game Wesley Burnside rushed for a season high 117 yards in 21 carries with one TD. Josh Dunkelberger scored two TDs on seven carries for 16 yards. McGarvey hit a 28 yard field goal in the first half, kicked off 7 times for 55.6 yards and punted once for 40 yards. The Knights open up the 3A District 4 play at UHS field on Friday versus Mt. Vernon. The game will feature a special honor for all veterans that can attend the game. We appreciate you serving our country. PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: Defensive Back: Damon Powell, had several key pass breaks ups and six tackles. Defensive Line: Reece Ewoldt graded out at 87% efficiency and helped out the defense to hold the Mustangs leading rusher to 100 yards. Cole Johnson had three tackles and graded out at 86% efficiency, helped hold the Mustang offense to 13 points. Offensive Receiver: Austin Bunz, super game on both sides of ball, 4 tackles on defense, 7 catches for 100 yards and 2 TDs on offense. Offensive Back: Wes Burnside, ran for 117 yards in 21 carries and one TD, 58 yards after contact, grade 94%. Offensive Line: Matt Gross, most consistent performance in run and pass game, helping offense produce 341 yards in total offense and 44 points. The Union Knights celebrate after a 44-13 win against Independence Friday, Sept 4. The Knights are now 2-0, going into the 2009 season.
