Union Knights Opening Game a Victory

September 2, 2009
Dysart Reporter

The Union Knight football team exploded on the first play from the scrimmage with an electrifying 64 yard touchdown pass from Steven McGarvey to Jared Wauters and never looked back while defeating Webster City (50-13) in class 3A action. Webster City made it to the second round of 3A post season play last season. McGarvey also had a super night with three fieldgoals (42, 44, and 47 yards) in excess of 40 yards, all in the first half. He broke the Union Knight record of 36 yards set by Marcus Porter versus Marion in 2001. In the passing department he was 11 of 21 for 215 yards with three TDs. McGarvey also averaged 48 yards on six kickoffs while sophomore Reid Monroe averaged 46 yards on three kickoffs.

Great team defense stopped the Lynx deceptive offense for the majority of the evening creating 5 fumbles and recovering 3 (Wauters, Mangrich, Siebel). Junior Blake Clark led the cause with 14 tackles including one TFL, followed by senior Jared Wauters with seven. Brad Siebel and Bob Mangrich had five tackles, and Austin Bunz and Justin Macal had four tackles to help lead a defense that only surrendered 247 yards (103 rushing, 145 passing) compared to the Knight offensive output of 422 (215 passing, 207 rushing).

On offense the offensive line opened up holes for Josh Dunkelberger who led all rushers with 111 yards in 9 attempts with two TDs. Wes Burnside broke loose on several long runs putting together 68 yards in 11 attempts and one TD. Seniors Jared Wauters (4 catches, 89 yards, 2 TDs) and Austin Bunz (4 catches, 57 yards) each had four receptions on the night with senior Zach Purdy catching two for 60 yards and one TD.
