Union girls Tennis

The Union Knight girls tennis team opened its 2009 season by traveling to Mt. Vernon on April 9, for a non-conference meet. The Knights played well, but Mt. Vernon was able to come away with a hard fight for a 6-3 win over the Knights. In Singles action, Brittany Ecklund, who was making her first career start at #1 Singles, looked very sharp, winning 8-2 over Dye of Mt. Vernon. Haley Flores had a great comeback win at #4 Singles for Union. After trailing 4-1 Flores was able to fight back and win 9-7 over Mt. Vernon's Melchert. Briar Zeien lost a very close 9-7 match against Sylvia Murray at #2 Singles. In doubles play, the #1 doubles team of Ecklund and Zeien won a marathon match 9-8(7-3) in near total darkness to secure Union's third match win. "The girls played well for their firstmeet of the year. "I think we are going to be a good team, as our new players gain experience", commented Coach Joe Schmitz. Union next travels to Eldora on April 14, to play South Hardin. Brittany Ecklund, who was part of two of the match wins for Union, was awarded meet medalist honors. Nadine Steger loses to Tayler Stastny(11) 0-8Doubles Play:1. Ecklund/Zeien defeat Dye/Murray 9-8(7-3) 2. Crees/Flores lose to Johnson/Dixon 2-8
