Union HS Musical Theatre and Ensemble Acting Named All-State Again!

The tradition continues.

The Union High School Fine Arts Department has again proven that hard work and determination pay off. One of their musical theatre entries in the Iowa High School Speech Association Large Group Contest has been named to perform at the All-State Festival on Feb. 21st. The cast of "Nunsense" which includes Megan Burnside, Jessica Brandt, Emily Brandt, Lauren Powell, Kirsten Rokke, and Ali Garwood will perform at 2:55pm in the Schemen building on the campus of Iowa State University. Out of all of the high schools in the state, only 20 entries are chosen for this honor each year. The musical theatre entries at Union are coached by Tim J. Mitchell and Korina Carlson.

Union was also very fortunate to have an ensemble acting group selected as a non-performing All-State nominee. Casey Ewald and TJ Gray performing "The Education of Angels" were selected for this honor. This ensemble acting group was coached by Patti Juhl.

The one thing that makes speech contest unique is the fact that all schools in the state compete on an equal basis regardless of size. There are no classifications. In the past 8 years, 19 out of 23 of Union's entries have been named to this honor. This is no small feat and most schools hope to have one entry get selected for this prestigious honor every few years. However, Union has become a consistant fixture at the All-State Festival for musical theatre. The All-State Festival is open to the public and wristbands for admission can be purchased at the Union High School office during normal business hours.
