Union Mathcounts team to try for Four Straight

MATHCOUNTS is a national competition for middle school students. Union has competed in this competition for many years. The competition begins with a 30 question test. The questions are extremely difficult, and students have a maximum of 40 minutes to complete them. Then the students take a second test which consists of 8 questions. They are in sets of 2 questions, and students have 6 minutes for each set of two. Students who are in the top 10 after the first two tests then compete head to head in the countdown round. The 10th place student takes on the 9th ranked student, and the winner advances to face the 8th ranked student and so on. This year the top 10 students were Natalie Hanson, Drake Mossman, Maddie LaPage, Gabe Klein, Caleb Larison, Nate Bryant, Leah Jungling, Riley McDowell, Brooklyn Rogers, Jess Larison. Union Middle School will send 16 students to a regional MATHCOUNTS competition at Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo on Sat., Feb. 21. Savannah Downing, Jacob Zeien, Owen Dalluge, Darian Davis, Marissa LaPage, and Grant Mullen will join those students listed above.They will be competing against about 24 other schools. Union has won the contest the past 3 years.The Top 5 teams and Top 4 individuals from this competition will advance to the State MATHCOUNTS Competition at Drake University in Des Moines on Fri., March 27.Good Luck on your quest to make it to State!
